Circle Bethany by jancola Circle Bethany by jancola
My husband took some pictures of my Circle!Bethany costume yesterday! (Dragon Age 2)

I'll post some more once I go through everything, but I'm pretty excited I finally (mostly) finished this thing and I wanted to share.

...and I stuck a Kirkwall logo in there because I don't know what I was looking at here. :P

Wow.  I remember seeing this half completed on a blog.  I recognised you from the Anders costume and also Morrigan and certain other DA communities on the internet *ahem*.  Anyway, this came out awesomely and I am, well.. in awe.  That's fantastic!  Totally watching you now.  ;-)

Ah I'm sure it's fine as long as her last name isn't Hawke :)

I don't know, I really don't want to get sued for it, so I think i just name something else, there are millions of names out there. :)

Great cosplay. I love it <3

Question though: is it hard to make? Because I was thinking of doing it but my schedule and economy isn't the best.

Thank you :)

For me this was the hardest cosplay I've ever done, particularly the bodice, because I wanted it to fit perfectly, and I don't really know anything about drafting patterns. It took me three tries to get it right.

Also collars, I don't understand them. And making my own bias tape, that was also difficult... I couldn't find any gold satin bias tape in the width I wanted. The whole project took me quite a bit of time, but I had a lot to learn as I went.

How hard it would be would depend on how comfortable you are with sewing, I guess.

The materials weren't expensive at all, though. It's mostly cotton sateen, which I got from denverfabrics.com for $4/yd (I used royal blue, with a little green RIT dye added to make it teal), plus a half yard of faux mongolian fur (fabrics.com), and some cheap gold satin from Joann Fabrics.

If you want more technical advice, I'd be happy to write more details.

Thanks for the reply.

Wow by looking at the cosplay, it doesn't seem that difficult.
I mean, putting aside the details of course.

Now that I think about it, it will be tough to make this. Also considering that I don't have the greatest varieties of fabrics and stuff to make cosplays in my country, it will be difficult indeed.

Anyway, thanks for the input. It's really helpful c:

I dyed the fabric myself, and I spent rather a lot of time obsessing over the shade... which might be a little crazy, but it's nice of you to notice :)

This is such a gorgeous costume!

It makes me want to cosplay more mages than just Flemeth. Their designs are so cool!

...Though, I'm not sure if this is your design or a "Dragon Age" design...truth be told, I haven't seen much of Bethany, since my character is a mage and Bethany went and got killed. Now I have to deal with Carver.

Thanks!

This is what Bethany wears when she goes to the Circle, if you don't take her to the Deep Roads. I like it better than the initial design :)

Okay, this makes sense. Carver became a Templar (because I didn't want to deal with his bitching), so this is the alternative.

I like this one better, too.

This is a very nice cosplay of Bethany! I think I prefer this to her starting outfit now that I have seen it done. Great eye for details and I  the blue.

I am curious, what more do you have to finish on this costume?

Thanks! I love Bethany, but I admit I was drawn to this version of her costume because I'm really digging teal right now :)

What's left: the bodice is supposed to have a lace-up back, like a corset. It looks pretty sweet in the game from behind. Blah, a lot of work though for something not everyone sees. I might get to it before SDCC.

I always feel the same way when I am working on something; then I realize I have learned something by doing it anyway. Saying that probably didn't make you feel better, but it tends to work its magic on me. Teal blue is my favorite color to wear and it really does suit you! After playing an apostate, it is surprising you are embracing the Circle mage... :giggle:

Haha, I like all flavors of mages ;)

The Circle is my favorite outcome for Bethany, I imagine her as the anti-Anders, making things better from the inside.

If I find the time, I know I will love it. It does look cooler. I just hate putting in eyelets, I had quite enough of them just doing the six on the front.

I liked playing both sides of the field as well. XD

You need the "Hang in there." kitty poster. I think Anders took them all for his pro mage campaign, but maybe if you can find one it will help keep you motivated. Remember, a mage without a cat can do irrational things.

What a great photo! And you even have Malcolm's Honour :) -- the details of the costume are great! I am quite envious. Did you end up drafting the pattern for it yourself? Or did you base it on something else?

Thanks! My husband is a super talented photographer! I wish I could remember to smile sometimes and not look dorky when I try to pose but he makes up the difference :P

It's a mix - I made the bodice based on a vintage sweetheart dress pattern that I modified, and then everything else is just trial and error. Mostly error. I don't even want to think about how much time I spent on this silly thing.

And I love Malcolm's Honor - weird naked lady staff is weird. :)

You don't look dorky at all :p !! And you can pull off not smiling, it lends personality to the persona you're conveying!

It really is lovely, can't stop looking at it. Great work, you can see all the care that went into making it!
